Android App Icon Sizes and Specs (2026)

Verified againstAndroid icon design specifications,Google Play graphic asset requirementson 2026-08-15.

Android has two icons. The Play Store listing icon is 512 x 512. The launcher icon on the device runs 48 to 192 pixels across the five density buckets. Supply full squares for both: Play applies its own 30% corner mask and shadow.

Android launcher icon size per density

The launcher icon is 48dp. Each density bucket multiplies that baseline, so the pixel size changes but the design does not. xxhdpi is the bucket most current phones fall into.

Do not pre-round the corners and do not bake in a drop shadow. Google Play applies its own mask at a corner radius of 30% of the icon size, about 154px on a 512px asset, and adds its own shadow. Round it yourself and Play masks the result a second time.

Adaptive icon sizes

An adaptive icon is two layers, a foreground and a background, each 108 x 108dp. The launcher masks them into whatever shape the device uses and may animate them independently. Only the centre 72 x 72dp is guaranteed visible: the outer 18dp on each side is reserved for the mask and for parallax, so anything you need read has to sit inside that safe zone.

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Android app icon be?

Two different answers, because Android has two icons. The Google Play listing icon is 512 x 512 pixels, a 32-bit PNG under 1024 KB. The launcher icon on the device is per density: 48 x 48 at mdpi, 72 at hdpi, 96 at xhdpi, 144 at xxhdpi, and 192 at xxxhdpi. If someone asks for one number, it is the 512 x 512 Play icon.

What is the xxhdpi app icon size?

144 x 144 pixels for the launcher icon, which is 48dp at 3x density. xxhdpi covers most current Android phones. If you are supplying an adaptive icon instead, the xxhdpi foreground layer is 324 x 324 pixels, because adaptive layers are 108dp rather than 48dp.

What is the Play Store app icon size?

512 x 512 pixels, 32-bit PNG with an alpha channel allowed, a maximum file size of 1024 KB, and the sRGB colour space. Supply a full square. Google Play applies its own corner mask at a radius of 30% of the icon size, about 154px on a 512px asset, and adds its own drop shadow.

Should I round the corners of my Android icon?

No. This is the single most common icon mistake. Play masks the icon itself at a 30% corner radius and adds a shadow, so a pre-rounded icon gets masked a second time and a baked-in shadow gets a second shadow on top. Supply a full square with square corners.

What size is an Android adaptive icon?

The foreground and background layers are each 108 x 108dp, which is 108 x 108 pixels at mdpi and 432 x 432 at xxxhdpi. Only the centre 72 x 72dp is guaranteed to be visible: the outer 18dp on every side is reserved for the launcher's mask and for parallax effects, so keep your mark inside that safe zone.

Do I still need the legacy per-density icon set?

Usually yes, alongside the adaptive icon. Adaptive icons are the modern path and most build tooling still expects the mipmap density set as well, and it is what older devices fall back to. Producing both costs nothing once you have a square source image.
